ISSUE 52           SATURDAY 09 APRIL 2011...

Welcome to Issue 52 of Manganui Notes, the e-newsletter of Manganui Ski Area and Stratford Mountain Club.

Winter has hit with a shock this week. The shorter hours have kicked winter into action, or is it those blocking high pressure systems over Tasmania, letting the arctic air sweep up over the country.

Here at Manganui you get a real sense of being in the nation's Conservation Estate...the walk in on the high altitude round the mountain track forces you to take in the scenery and the environment...

Our Ski/Board Swap date has been set, more below.

Working Bees are gearing up and into full swing...thanks to those who have given up their time to attend.

In this issue...

"Carry it in - carry it out" rubbish policy for Manganui Ski Area

Rubbish clearing is a big job for our ski area staff, given the intermittent operation. We request that all mountain users (as in the rest of the National Park) carry out the rubbish they bring in.
We have real issues with beer bottles, food waste and general rubbish (apart from that purchased from the Canteen of course!).
Please carry out your rubbish upon leaving the ski area.

New Safety Services Coordinator for 2011

SMC is pleased to announce that Bernhard Freinademetz has been employed for the upcoming 2011 season.  Bernhard is from Austria.

He has:

  • studied Law
  • worked for the Air & Style snowboard contest as head of the organizing committee.
  • worked for the International Snowboard Federation as the TV production manager of the World cup.
  • worked as a service agency for international commercial and feature film productions.
  • founded the network base
  • founded a club to inform youngsters about avalanches and alpine dangers. 12000 kids went through these courses.
  • started a heliskiing operation in Romania in 2003.
  • started the education of the international mountain guide association in Austria in 2007 and finished degree of an UIAGM mountain and ski guide.

Bernhard says he was always interested in travelling and adventures in the mountains; having visited many European alpine countries and some countries outside Europe as  Canada, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Indonesia – this motivates me to visit your beautiful area in New Zealand.
Bernhard replaces Nicholas Fountain, who has since returned to Colorado.

We welcome Bernhard and hope is stay and work in Taranaki is an enjoyable one.

George Mason & Crew complete exterior staining for this season...

George and his crew of helpers have completed the staining of the Manganui Lodge and Warwick Brown exterior cladding, an extensive summer project. All looking great, and will stand up to the weather with Georges Goo.
Thanks to George and his helpers!

Jonathan is an apprentice chef at The Mountain House, and new SMC member. Rob and George have been involved with SMC over many years.

New ground laid aluminium power cable install, route clearing complete

Brooke Fletcher and his team of regular helpers have completed the route clearing for this activity.

The duct is now on the mountain, awaitng the aluminium cable to arrive and the laying/cable pulling to commence.

Thanks to Brooke and others who helped out with this activity over the last 3-4 weekends.

(The project represents a $200,000 investment from Powerco and is part of a longer term company objective to completely underground the network supply to the area, from the bush line at Pembroke Road.

Powerco says it is pleased to be able to support both the SMC through the improvement of the electricity supply and DoC by improving the visual amenity of the area. Powerco plans to complete the installation and connection of the new cable before the first winter snows, depending on how early they fall)

Corporate Affairs Manager

July 2011 will see the fastest team event to hit our shores. Be there to see USA take on Canada in an International Ice Hockey showdown, never seen before in New Zealand.

Christchurch’s CBS Arena is just one stop in a three game series, with the other two games been hosted by Vector Arena Auckland on July 23rd and Dunedin Ice Stadium on 3rd August.

The invitational tour is led by NHL superstar Kyle Quincey who is a defender for the Colorado Avalanche.

The players have been carefully selected to bring you the largest action sports event of the year, in an unbelievable display of speed, skill and action.

The New Zealand exhibition tour also features Canadian commentator Kerry Goulet (gouch) who will call the games live, while the GAMES are filmed for National and International television, all staged on a fully portable NHL spec ice hockey floor.

Spectators will be treated to the full American production with indoor pyros, flame throwers, world class entertainment and big screen TVs. The CBS Arena Christchurch has been split into two sides, Canadian supporters on one side and USA supporters on the other so make sure you pick a team to cheer for.

This is an event that cannot be missed, don’t be left at home, be a part of the action.
